Log in to Your Website
- Type wp-admin to the end of your site’s URL
(e.g., template.biology.missouri.edu/wp-admin) - Enter your PawPrint ID and password
Log out of Your Website
- Place your cursor over “Howdy, [Your Name]” in the upper right-hand corner. A small drop-down menu will appear.
- Click the Log Out option
Change the Background Color
- Click on Appearance in Dashboard menu
- Click on Background.
- You can customize the background of your page by uploading an image or selecting a color.
- Click Save Changes when done.
Change Header Image
- Click on Appearance in Dashboard menu
- Click on Header.
- Choose and upload file.
- Click Save Changes when done.
Change Website Title
- Click on Appearance.
- Click on Customize.
- Click on Set Title & Tagline.
- Enter new title.
- Click Save & Publish when done.
Open and Edit an Existing Page
- Click on Pages on the left-hand menu.
- Place your cursor over the page you want to edit and click on Edit that appears below the page name.
- Edit the content.
- To preview your changes, click on Preview Changes. To return to the editing page, click on the small, gray Edit button (to the left of the page title).
- Click Update when finished.
Create a New Page
- Click on Pages.
- Click the Add New sub-tab under Pages.
- Add title.
- Add content.
- Set Parent Page. If the new page is a ‘child’ page (sub-page) of another page, then select the appropriate Parent Page from the drop-down menu in the Page Attributes pane. The drop-down menu contains a list of all the Pages already created for your site. The permalink for your page will reflect the chosen hierarchy.
- Click on Preview to review your page.
- Click Publish when done.
- Add new page to Menu (so it appears on the website)
- Click on Appearance under Dashboard.
- Click on Menus.
- Locate the pane titled Pages within the Menus page.
- Within this pane, select the page that you want to add to your menu by clicking the checkbox next to the page’s title.
- Click the Add to Menu to add your selection to your Top Menu.
- To make the page a subordinate of another page in your Top Menu, position the ‘child’ page underneath its ‘parent’ page and then drag it slightly to the right.
- Click Save Menu when done.
Delete a Page or Post
- Click on Pages/Posts on Dashboard menu.
- Hover over the Page/Post name you want to delete.
- Click on Trash in the menu that appears underneath the title.
Post News
- Click on Posts.
- Click the Add New sub tab under Posts.
- Title your news item. WordPress will use the title to compose the permalink for the post.
Tips: Avoid using the same title twice. You can use commas, apostrophes, hyphens, etc. - Enter content.
- Click on Preview to review post.
- Click the checkbox next to News in the Categories pane.
- Click on Publish when done.
- Click on Save if you want if your post is a draft. You can return to it later by clicking on Posts, selecting the post from the list of all posts, and clicking on Edit.
Insert Images into Posts and Pages
- Place your cursor on the line where you want the image to appear.
Tip: It’s a good idea to place your cursor on the left margin of the text even if you want the image to appear on the right. There is an Alignment setting that will allow you to control where on the page the image will appear (right, left, center) and how the text will flow around it. - Click on Add Media.
- Upload image file from your computer by dragging it into the upload file OR select a previously uploaded image from your media library.
- Edit your image in the Attachment Detail pane
- Add a Caption (the text will be displayed below the image)
- Add Alt text for image (for people who rely on screen readers)
- Set Display Settings
- Set desired Alignment (left, right, center, none)
- Set desired Image Size – thumbnail, medium, large, full-size.
- Click on Insert into page to add the image to your page or post.
- You can edit the image settings by clicking on the Edit Image button in the left-hand corner of the image. You can remove the image from your page/post by clicking on the Remove Image button.
